Paul's Book Page

Introduction: Why this page exists

I've often thought that many of the books i've read were unlikely to be picked up by most Christians.  The reasons for this vary, but include the theological or spiritual disposition of the individual Christian, the title, author, or even the cover of the book in question.

This page is an attempt to encourage Christians firstly to read more widely, and to consider theological positions and traditions other than the one they were raised/taught in.  A secondary purpose for this list is that it makes me be more analytical about my reading, and find an articulate expression for my feelings about particular books.

Disclaimer: Where i'm coming from

As most of the books reviewed here are exegetical/theological in nature, i feel it is necessary to state the general theological position i hold before i begin.  I know this will likely taint your opinion of me, but it should also allow you to get a reasonably accurate picture of the books i'm reviewing.

My main emphasis in most theological issues is that exegesis comes before everything else.  Nearly all of the books that i recommend have a solid basis in Scripture.  Authors who allow their theological grid to limit their options with respect to interpretation of Scripture passages tend not to rate highly in my book.  Good authors recognise their theological grid and attempt to compensate for it.  This is a large part of the reason for this section - i need to recognise and compensate for my theological grid as well.

The best term i've found to describe myself theologically is a "non-practising Charismatic".  What i mean is that i'm Evangelical in theology, with a Charismatic position on the gifts of the Holy Spirit, but i have generally not experienced the manifestations associated with that movement.

So, now that you've found the pigeonhole in your mind that i belong in (i hope it took you a bit of effort to find it!), read on. I hope you find something that benefits you.
